Weekly Update - Week of 1/28
Dear Parents and Players-
We’ve had a very busy week with everyone back on court for practices and a total of 7 matches for our teams! The momentum continues with another busy week coming up.
That being said, I would like to see more consistency in practice attendance from all players. This is a special outreach that everyone is expected at practice UNLESS you have a prior agreement with me as coach. Practice will get us better and will improve the team experience in general. Players who are less present at practice can be moved down in the team rankings.
Match results from the week of 1/15
Event Reminders:
Again, a reminder that everyone is expected to attend practice on their assigned practice days. I would like to see more regularity in everyone's training commitment, especially leading up to all the competition ahead of us.
Challenge/Ladder matches for HS Nationals will wrap up by 1/29. This will be the final round to determine the rosters for Nationals and rosters for matches the weeks of . If you are potentially a top 9 player and can not attend Nationals for any reason, please let us know asap!
Information to parents of players rostered for Nationals will be sent as soon as challenge matches conclude.
Matches this week:

***Attention Boys JV players. In order to give matches to our players who are towards the bottom of the roster, we are reaching out to area teams to arrange additional matches. These would occur on Saturday, 2/3 and Saturday, 2/10. We will update you as soon as we (hopefully) confirm arrangements with other teams.

Practices:
This week we have our last week of reduced optional practice Mon-Fri due to midterms. While these practices are optional, we strongly encourage players to get on court as much as possible as teams will be busy with matches as soon as midterms end. As mentioned in communications last week, there is no bus to practice on exam days. These dates are: Thursday (1/18) and Friday (1/19). There WILL be a bus on Tuesday, 1/16, as this is a full day of school. Also, please note that we are working on a few additional matches for our teams, so please continue to check the match schedule on a regular basis.
Due to midterms, per DHS policies, we will have a reduced OPTIONAL practice schedule the weeks of 1/8 and 1/15:
JV Training Team players can train on
Tournament opportunities:
While we prepare for challenge matches, matches vs other teams and Nationals, I highly recommend all our players to compete in some USSquash tournaments to become more familiar and confident with the competition. This is of course optional for all, but here are a number of tournament opportunities at MSquash locations for all those who are interested to play: click here. There are many more tournaments to discover on USSquash.org/tournaments, but sometimes playing your first tournaments on home basis makes it a little easier and less stressful.

High School Nationals 2024:
As mentioned in the last Weekly Update, after discussion with the Athletic Director Mr. Manfredonia, we have decided that we will announce the teams for Nationals on February 4, 2024, rather than now. Previously this was always done at the end of Dec as DHS needs to pay hotel and US Squash fees early January. This year, MSquash will take care of the prepayment and will bill the selected players early Feb.
We chose to do so as I am a strong believer in the benefits of the postponement of team selection - it will give players and their enthusiasm the possibility to continue to grow even more, and get their best game ready for the biggest event of the season. We have a great team with players who are currently all at very similar levels, they will get more time to grow into their game before we make the final team selection.

NEW PROCESS FOR TEAM SELECTION FOR HIGH SCHOOL NATIONALS
After discussion with the Athletic Director Mr. Manfredonia, we have decided that we will announce the teams for Nationals on February 4, 2024, rather than now, at the end of December. Previously this was always done at the end of Dec as DHS needs to pay hotel and USSquash fees early January.

JV Training Team players can train on
- Wed 1/17 JV Boys & Girls
- Sun 1/21 JV Boys
- Tue 1/16 V Boys & Girls
- Thu 1/18 V Boys & Girls

- The top 9 will be announced on Feb 4 based on matches that will be played in the last 2 weeks of January and the start of February.
- The players need to be ready to travel with us and be available and fit to play in Philadelphia from Thu evening Feb 22 until Sunday Feb 25.
- Once the selection has been made, and the players have agreed to be available and have accepted their spots on the team, the dues for participation in the event, hotel and team dinners will need to be paid to MSquash.
- The co-pay for Nationals is estimated to be around $500-$550 for hotel and a team dinner. Players will need to bring money for other meals and misc expenses.

That's it for now. We wish everybody a nice time with their families and hopefully stay fit on the courts as well.
Sending you warm holiday greetings,
Your coach,
Katline Cauwels
